I was under the car checking out what went wrong over the winter and found my rubber gear box mount had turned to jelly. I found Ted and Woody have these but now I have a new noise, I think I May have an idea but looking for second opinions....

When I have it out of gear, clutch out, it is a rattling noise... clutch in=no noise, in gear=no noise...

I do not think it is related to the mount being shot but it may make it worse..

Let me hear your diagnosis ... Thanks

I wouldn't try to diagnose anything until you replace the mount and get everything good and tight under there.

Does your shifter seem 'loose'? Does the noise go away if you lift up on the shift knob? The shifter extension is attached to the gearbox with rubber bushes. When these go bad the shifter feels loose and vague. Mine was like this when I got it. There are poly bushes available once in awhile on ebay, otherwise you should be able to easily source the rubber ones from the regular suppliers. Real fun to replace too.

I replaced the shifter bushings when i rebuilt the rive line 7 years ago and 30,000 miles(wow, can not beleive it has been that long) but they still look good. I wil be getting the mount from Woody this week and replace it Friday or Saturday. Hopefully ( I know "hope is not a method" even to fix an 8) the mount fixes the rattle, Woody feels it might, but if not and I have to drop the drive line i may go and pick up the 7DHC and swap it into it.

Any other ideas?

If it were the shifter bushings, the shifter quadrant would drop down and ride on top of the driveshaft. Noise will be present when driveshaft is spinning. It goes away when you lift up on the shifter. Sounds to me like you need to replace the throw out bearing. When the tranny comes out, you might as well budget for a lightened flywheel, heavy duty clutch, new GM sincromesh fluid, and shifter bushings. I just had to drop my tranny to unstick a clutch disc that has been nonoperable since 1986. Not a bad job except for the top starter bolt. Dropping the tranny is alot easier on an 8 than on a 7 because of the extra room behind the bell housing bolts.

Thatr was my guess... the throw out bearing. lighten fly wheel maybe, shifter bushings i just checked and are pretty much like new. Heavy duty clutch, not sure I need it but while i have it out it would make sense...
