It was awesome here. Probably the best one, even the late-night ones. The sky was dark, but the sun was high enough to illuminate the orbiter and SRBs beyond anything I've seen - when the SRBs dropped it was like looking at three bright stars on a dark blue background. The smoke trail was every color imaginable, finishing in extremely bright white.

Hehe you were looking at it facing east while I was facing north! The trajectory looked like it went towards the NE which would explain the cloud being way left for you!! That cloud was a result of the tanks separating, right?
PS, The colors were just too spectacular weren't they! Only one more to look forward to I hear. I will have to climb up on the roof for that one!

That little cloud was "natural". Just sittin' up there, bumpin' along. :laugh:
Colors were astounding. Told 'smits before the launch it'd be stunning, as the sun would be JUST over horizon here and illuminate the trail to brilliance. It did that and more. We watched the SRB's separate and could see 'em tumble away as the ship kept climbin' out. Super!

What Doc said - the cloud was natural, it was <span style="font-style: italic">well</span> north of where the SRBs separated. The shuttle did go north-east. When I watch it I turn toward the cape (south) and it flies out and up the beach. When the SRBs hit the water they were just about due east of me this time.

Wow! The glow of that cloud was too intense to look "natural", such a contrast to the colors in the trail (which at times looked like neon!!). The timing for launch with lighting by Mother Nature was awesome! The launch was the main topic of conversation on lunch-break at work today! Everybody down here watched it!

Now I wish our trip to Florida had not been the first week of March. Oh well.

I got to watch a shuttle launch (albeit from a distance - I was at the Chateau Elan at Sebring) in 2001.
Even from that distance, it was awe inspiring.
