I was impressed by their performance as well but there was a point in the film when the cars were in the pits and and something mechanical had gone wrong with all three cars and a decision had to be made whether to pull out of the race or soldier on. I was just curious as to what the malfunction was?

I'm not sure, but I think it was something to do with an overheating situation.

Yes, I was wondering about that too. The narration seemed to be more of an attempt to be colorful than informative.

The Wikipedia entry says only that they "battled valve problems" the entire race.
