Leaking water pump

The water pump in my 100 is leaking--now about a 3 second drip--and I suspect the seal. Moss does not carry these and wonder if anyone has a source, either for an exchange rebuilt pump or just the seal--assuming it can be pressed in.

I know Bill Bolton used to sell rebuilt wp's but read that he recently retired and sold his stuff to someone.

I'm hoping to take the car on the road next weekend so any help will be appreciated.

Michael,

Generally, when a pump is leaking, to replace the seal requires the pump to be totally disassembled, which usually results in ruining the bearings. So, if you want to rebuild it, a rebuild kit is needed...buying a rebuilt would be much easier, especially if you want to use it this weekend.

I've rebuilt mine in my 3000 and from what I remember it wasn't too hard. Nothing as fun as doing the one my Europa for sure (requires removing the motor and the cylinder head/oil pan to get it out....then you have to rebuild it as it is integral to the timing cover).

I've got some rebuild kits I got 30 yrs ago, I'll try & get down in basement this weekend & see if the seals have part #'s, Kit consists of seals, impeller, shaft &bushings&clips, As I remember they use bronze bushes, not brgs, so no problem when pressing apart,(as I remember) cheers Genos2

Early water pumps are bolted together so you can easily check the seal by undoing the nut on the shaft at the front. I replaced the seal with one from a modern swimming pool pump and it works a treat, although it did leak for the first few minutes after startup while bedding in. A small amount of lathe work is required to fit the new seal.

Andy.

Hello Michael,

If you decide to rebuild your pump at some point, Try contacting Timkin bearing. I am sure they carry replacement seals and bearings for most anything! Your originals should have a serial number stamped on the face of the seal and bearing. Your local Granger store might be able to order it for you as well. Regards, Michael, New Lenox IL.
