What is the best way of removing the metal shackle pin bushings in the leaf spring rear supports on my 64 BJ8 phI? Thanks and have a good day!

John

Hi John, See Leaf Spring bushing removal By Stretch 10/23/07.--Keoke

Keoke,
I was talking about the bushings that are in the spring support that is attached to the frame of the car not the spring. They appear to be bronze or something. Moss has them listed on page 106, chasis, part no. 15 ($7.65). Thanks and have a good day!

OH!!OK John, I think you may have to remove the spring to remove those bushes. As a minimum I guess you will have to soak them thoroughly with PB Blaster to free them if possible.--Fwiw--Keoke

Keoke,
I will do that and add a little heat if possible. I am just about done with all the structure repair/replacement and rust hole repairs (only took about a year!)so I can remove the drive train and tackle this problem. Thanks and have a good day!

Hi John,

Once you have the springs off then you can press the old bushings out and press the new ones in. Trying to beat them out will not work because the rubber absorbs all the energy and you get nowhere. I don't have a press so I just took them to a machine shop and they did it while I was standing there for about 8 bucks and 5 minutes.

Take care,

George

Hi John,
The bushings ARE metal on the earlier BJ8's. Same as on my BN2. They are a shouldered bushing that goes in from both sides. Mine were iron, yours could be bronze I guess. Same part #021-372 as for my BN2, item 23 on page 74.

I removed mine (shackle pin out of course) by running a flat end punch in through one bushing hole, catching the inside end of the opposite bushing & driving it out. There is a gap inside between the bushings. Once the first bushing is out, you have clear punch access to the other bushing. They actually came out fairly easy, no heat required.

You could even work a narrow chisel blade in between the bushing's shoulder & the support to wedge the bushing out a bit.

Guys

Don't know about your experiences with the removal of these bushes with the wing ( fender) still installed, but mine was one of frustration. Luckily (or not) the inside one fell out, on one side, so I was able to get a bolt in and pull the outer one out, but the other side was a different matter altogether; could not budge either of them. Had a chat to my friendly Healey man who advised that in his experience the wear occured on the pin and that I may be able to get away with just replacing the pin. On checking, he was right, could not detect any noticable difference between the side with the new bushes and the side with the old ones in. I will replace them one day soon as the metal worm is begining to show through on the body to wing joint.

Bob,
I did check mine and there is some ovality, not much but some. I don't know how much is too much but I guess that the pin should not have much movement. I am about thru with the structural welding so I can remove the drivetrain and work on this problem. Thanks and have a good day!
