later spridget pedal box install in early spridget

I recently purchased a later spridget pedal box with the separate master cylinders for the brakes and clutch. The pedal box has been modified to add a 3rd master cylinder for the clutch to the far right hand side (as looking at it from engine bay). Has anyone installed the later and or modified pedal box into a bugeye or early spridget? anyone have pics and/or a template of how much and where you had to cut to fit the later pedal box.

I just finished rebuilding the girling 5/16" master cylinders that came with it to be used for the clutch and the rear brakes, I will be buying a new 3/4" master cylinder for the front brakes.

heres a photo of a set up very similar to what I am using

I put one in mine but I went with stock later Midget masters. I opened the bottom of the stock hole about 3/4" toward the inside. If was a tough call whether to go in or out but I figured it was a little easier to change the wiper motor location once than to deal with no room for my left foot when it's not on the pedal.

You also need to close in the rest of the hole above the pedal box. Don't forget to weld some bent washers to that plate to hook the pedal return springs.

You may want to re-figure your master sizes, you'll build more line pressure with that smaller master(on the rear). Normally you end up with a smaller dia on the front circuit.

I just realized that Im an idiot. the master cylinders that I currently have are 5/8 not 5/16". Would it be smarter use 5/8's units across the board or perhaps use 5/8 for the front and 3/4 for the rear?

the rx7 clutch cylinder was 5/8 bore so I was planning on using 1 of the 5/8's for that.

Thanks!!

There are a lot of variables you're dealing with. The main one being what size are the discs and calipers you are using in the rear? If the calipers are anywhere near the same piston size as the fronts you will need a larger master for the rear circuit. They make a 7/10ths in master that can pair up nicely with a 5/8 front.
I'm assuming you will have the bias bar like in the pic?

If you go to the Tilton website they have a service where you can fill in your system particulars and they'll email back their rec's. You'll need pedal ratio, disc dia., caliper piston dia's and type(dual, single etc)

Love the engine choice, the other side of my car fetish involves an RX7 and RX2 race cars.

I have a modified BE pedal box that uses 2 3/4" Tilton masters and they work well. I'm limited in my picture posting ability, but will be happy to email what I have. Basically you add 2 upright metal plates to the original box and thru bolt the masters from the sides. Everything else remains factory.

Rut, I'd like pictures of that.

I cut mine like this

I also made a plate to bolt on under the upper half to close the foot compartment from the engine compartment.

Seems like you cut a little more than that, where's the back of your car?

I did the conversion of the later master cylinders to my BE and haven't figured what to do with the wiper motor. If anyone has a solution, I would appreciate getting the information.
Thanks,
Charlie

Mount the wipers on the other side, or make a longer tube and mount on the inner fender.

I have this conversion in my vintage race Bugeye. The motor has to be relocated closer to the wheel arch as I recall. I have the car stored elsewhere, so can't take any pix. If I can find some I took with my film camera, I'll post them later. I also used a late style motor.

Donn,

thank you! That was exactly what I was looking for. i am going to fabricate a cover plate to between the pedal box and the footwell also. it looks like you centered the new pedal box on the original opening and then enlarged the hole to accommodate the clutch?

The other side sounds like a good solution. I don't know how I would make a longer tube. Wouldn't one need a longer cable also, and if so, how would one find that cable?

Thanks,
Charlie

jgrewe,

initially I am going to stay with the original sprite rear end and drum brakes. If I start breaking axles, I have an '84 rx7 gsl rear with disc brakes that I can narrow and install.

I do have a balance bar installed between the front and rear masters and I am also considering installing a bias valve on the line running to the rear brakes for additional adjustability.

I found a post by Hap from awhile back that discussed master cylinder sizes:

Something people often overlook, not saying you are though, smaller bore=higher pressure, on the race cars where we use dual Tilton racing master cylinders, I use a 3/4" front (some even use 5/8") and 7/8" rear, since I do not want to create as much pressure to the rear.

Perhaps for the time being I should use the 5/8's for the clutch and front brakes and purchase a new 7/8" for the rear.

I finally have some pictures of the modified BE pedal box with the dual Tilton MCs, but I'm picture posting challenged...still. I'll be happy to email the pictures to someone who can post.
Thanks, Rut

I thought I would just give some people an idea of how this stuff fits the way I did it. First though, I'm using a single, later model m-cyl. This way there's no interference with the wiper motor in it's standard location. I may convert to double system later.

Rut, If you get a photo sight similar to what I use, photobucket, flickr, picasaweb etc, they're free. Upload the pictures there, copy the link they give you and paste it here. To get the pictures to display you have to put the {img) http\\imageLink\image.jpg (/img) around the link, though replace the () with []

The kids are home and I got some help!
