Spitfire Later Spit front suspension

I was looking on Ebay and found a set of front springs for an older Spit (pre 74) that says they were shorter that the springs on the later models, because of the US bumper height regulations, and the later cars have a front end that is about 1.5" or so higher than they were intended to be...the seller claims that the springs are a straight swap, and putting the older style springs on will drop the front end back down where it was intended to be, resulting in better handling...anybody ever tried this? Or maybe even just cutting some length off of your stock coils could work?

My only fear is that other suspension settings would then have to be changed, and that is a whole can of worms I'm not ready for right now...

I'm not sure that swapping springs would change other settings drastically. On the other hand, after a swap like that, it couldn't hurt to have the alignment checked...and make sure trunnions, bushings, etc., are all up to snuff as well.

All in all, it's probably better to swap springs than to try to cut down your current ones. Just do NOT try to swap over your shocks without the proper tool!!! You can easily swap spring/shock units without any tools, but disassembly and reassembly DO require a proper spring compressor. (Probably any mechanic who does MacPherson strut replacements will be able to do this much less expensively than if you were to go out and buy a good spring compressor.)
