TR2/3/3A Late TR3A Rear Interior Support

How is the rear interior back fastened down near the floor of a late TR3A. Right now it is loose and flops back and forth. See attachment.

Sorry Don, I can't answer the question with certainty but I would guess there may be a small lip with holes over which you place a speed clip then use a chrome posidrive screw with special washer; thats how the back board attaches on the TR4 series.
The car looks great, this must be the one for which you were quoted a huge number of hours for painting?

Thanks Simon - A New Zealand friend who lives in SW France responded on another site and he explained about the same as you. Yes the painting was finished just after New Years. See attachment. It'll be spending its 2nd life down the road from you. I belongs to Frank Redmond who lives near 400 & 401. We expect to have it on the road in April.

I believe there were two or three 90 deg. metal tabs that were rivited to the bottom edge of the board and stuck out from the bottom so you could screw it in and hide the screws under the carpet.

That's how mine are - little L brackets connected at the bottom - but considering the DPO I wasn't sure if it was original or not. The panel I have is definately what left the factory - not some bodge from the local "interiors-R-us"

If you want I can pull mine off and take a picture on sunday when I've got a little spare time - just let me know. I need to tighten the clamp on my fuel filler anyway since I forgot when I had the tank out.

If you can, a photo would be most helpful Jim. There are two holes in the masonite base board but no brackets. There are no holes through the red vinyl too. This red interior part still has the TRF label on it from about 15 years ago. When I cut out the rear floor to MIG weld in the floor we see in the attachment above, there were two holes drilled through the rusty old original floor but were not being used.

Thanks to all who suggested how it can or should be done. With those comments, I made 2 brackets out of sheetmetal, pulled back the vinyl covering and pop riveted them onto the masonite backboard. Then I re-stapled the vinyl back on. The brackets go downwards, then jog to the rear before coming back towards the front. The part to the front is screwed to the floor with a sheetmetal screw and they are covered by the carpet. The carpet fits under the backboard and the "jog" in the brackets means that no-one would ever see the cut edge which is about 1/4" behind the bottom of the backboard because of the "jog" in the brackets.

It looks perfect.

HI Don,
Do you have a picture? I picked up a bench off ebay during the winter and will have to affix it to my car when it comes out of storage in a month...Likely will be facing the same challenges as I don't recall any anchoring point on the car nor bench,

Kerry = What do you mean by a "bench" ? It's all done and the carpet is in - hiding the brackets. I have no photos, but I can sketch it and send you a copy.

By bench i meant upholstered seat - like the one you are working on, my car is also a late model TR3 with the bump out for the occasional seat already there - and like you i have to figure out how to put the two together.
No worries about the photo, just thought if it were still exposed, it might be easy to post a shot.

Kerry, if you have an upholstered occaisional seat to install you need two threaded "bolts" which go into the ledge behind the front seats.
These are not normal bolts, but have hex shanks above the threads, a thinner "neck" about .75 inch above the ledge and a rounded head. The seat cushion pops into position and is located by these pins. I forget whether a captive nut is on the underside of the ledge but I suppose you could tack weld one in place if your car did not have this option originally.
I should point out, my TR4a donor shell came with this arrangement but no interior whatsoever, so I am speculating that this is how all this works, not 100% certainty!
