Late Stromberg Carbs

I have a '79 MGB with the single stromberg carb that requires a special tool to adjust the mixture, since you can't adjust the mixture while the car is running and tune it that way--can anybody tell me if which way to turn the tool to richen the mixture and which way to lean.

It feels a little lean to me.

I have the manual but it just talks about adjusting to get to the right CO level, which I don't have the tools to test, nor is it my primary concern.

Long 3mm Allen wrench, IIRC.

Clockwise looking from the top will enrich the mix. That raises the needle in its receiver. The tool for the task is aught but a way to keep the piston from turning and putting stress on the diaphragm. If the little O-ring in the needle receiver is good you can just use a finger in the throat to apply a bit of resistance to the piston and make the adjustment that way (without the tool).

Do NOT be tempted to force it if it feels "stuck"... you'll auger out the adjuster, tear a diaphragm, etc. If it's hard to turn you need to call Joe Curto and get a rebuild kit, then go right thru it.

Thanks DR. E, I have the tool, just wasn't sure how to use it. Hope it is not stuck, but with a 30 year old car who knows?

I have had a few 60s british sportscars, methinks I liked the engineering a little better before they added on the emmissions control changes.

Well the needle adjustment was not stuck, but it was at the end of its adjustment towards the rich end already, the cars runs ok when warmed up, but it takes a while to warm up, even on a warm day--Although I haven't measured the actual MPG yet I have only put gas it in once since I got it about a month go, it seems to just keep going and going on the same tank. With gas prices as they are maybe I should just leave it alone!

Yup!

Remember: Once ya start "touching" it, you break th' spell.

At least you can adjust the mixture on the Strombergs on your car. With my Lotus, what you get is what you've got.

What do you have on that thing, Jody? I thought it was 175CD Strombergs.
