Late O/D speedo drive question

I have a 79 overdrive in the 73 i am finishing up. The cable i purchased has a square end that goes into the trans. It will not go in more than about 3/8". I checked a non overdrive 79 cable i have and the end is more diamond shaped. I removed the trans gear and sure enough there is a factory crimp just above the 3/8" spot not letting the cable enter more than that. I stuck a probe into the hole and its all clear just no way to get the cable past the crimp. Since i will be running a 75 or 76 speedo head (1000TPM)i need the old style cable. The later 77 and up cars had a different thread on the speedo. Thoughts or suggestions welcomed! Anyone have a extra speedo drive gear from a 75 or 76 O/D? Bob
