I learned a few things today about bleeding brakes. I was having a tough time priming the master cylinder on Tuesday, so I thought I’d try to let gravity help me overnight. Kept the rear left speed bleeder open and called it a day. Today I checked the reservoir and it was still at the same height, no fluid had gone through the system. I had remembered that trick about putting fluid in the brake light switch, so I decided to do that before sending fluid through the system. As I went to put the switch back, I found brake fluid dripping out of the three-way. Hmmm. Without toughing the speed bleeder, I was able to start bleeding the system normally. My thought is the valve in the speed bleeder doesn’t breath enough to allow fluid to flow from the reservoir. Once I remove the brake switch, gravity was able to overcome the sealed air pressure. Another note is about the reservoir gasket we were talking about a while ago. I have not sealed the little slit in it. I had the cap on the reservoir but not screwed on in between refills. As the fluid dropped, the vacuum it created would pull the gasket down out of shape. I’m thinking the slit doesn’t need to be sealed after observing this. On to the clutch tomorrow (well, today).
