TR2/3/3A Last Hurdle w/TR3 Rack & Pinion

As many of you may know, converting a TR3 to rack and pinion steering has one major flaw...that beautiful control head with the trafficator and horn becomes useless. There is one system out there that has a slip ring that retains the feature, but it negates the self-canceling feature of the trafficator.

Last week, I bit the bullet, and installed an MGA directional switch as posted here.

This week, I had to get the horn operating with my new wheel. The new wheel came with a horn button, so I figured there had to be some way to make it work.

Taking inspiration from alot of racing cars I see with a coiled retractable cable attaching the wheel to whatever the buttons on the wheel operate, I decided to go the same route.

A trip to Radio shack and I had a two conductor coiled wire. Since I only needed one wire, I just hooked both wires together. They are 18 gauge, but together they will be sufficent to operate the horn relay.

This was the last hurdle to a NY state inspection. Next week I'll register the car and start DRIVING... :driving:

Art, if you haven't buttoned it up yet, perhaps
drill out yout hub hole a little larger, and fit in a rubber grommet for the horn wires to run through. As it is now, you might have a little wire chafing there....
Just a thought...

That's 'cause great minds think alike! Not only that, you've got the same wheel...'cept yours is drilled...mine's slotted.

I thought about putting some sort of grommet in there, but I'll keep an eye on it and see how it goes. I can add it later if it looks like it might be a problem.

After the fact but you could have run the wire down the center tube and replicated a stator like the German R&P unit you talked of earlier. Really a simple solution and no exposed wires.
