Laborious, but a good idea.

Now that I've amassed a good number of digital optics and cameras, it's time to record all the serial numbers. I'd always kept the film gear list up-to-date over the years, but neglected this DSLR stuff. I suppose a spread-sheet wold be best, with a couple printed copies hidden strategically around the hovel. Came across the analog gear list behind a framed document the other day and was reminded to do the digital stuff. Is this something anyone else does?

No, a good idea however.

For a few years in the late '80's I managed a ma & pa camera store; a "new, used, buy & sell" place. More than once we'd see a bag of gear come through the door, carried by someone wanting to sell. They usually gave some story about an "uncle" or such and appeared as if they couldn't even load a roll of film in the camera... we always demanded a driver's license/state ID, had to hold the gear for 30 days and check against a list of reported stolen gear. More than once recovered someone's stuff as a result. We were on a first name basis with city detectives.
