Knife knockoffs?

A friend gave me a "Lara Eagle" knife set for Christmas. Nice box, good looking knives, whetstone included. But it's tough (impossible?) to get a smooth cutting edge, and it seems to lose its edge quickly. Friend bought it on Etsy, $142 on sale for $56. hmmmm

I also noticed the box lettering isn't centered on the top.

I can't even find info on the company, but there are lots of Reddit and Quora posts about "fake" Lara Eagle knives, particularly on Etsy. Another weird thing ... on the Lara Eagle website, their email address is a gmail address. And the website itself is "LaraEagleKnive", not Knives.

Do any BCFrs have "Lara Eagle" knives?

Thanks.
Tom M.
PS - on their Contact page, I see "Phone (WhatsApp only): +19292786427" What does "Phone WhatsApp only" mean?

I've never even heard of them.

My son's girlfriend got a new knife a couple of weeks ago and I tried to sharpen it for her. It was like trying to sharpen bar stock, just absolutely horrible steel.

I think they're all from Pakistan. That doesn't bother me much, as the product doesn't say where it's made. The seller (not Etsy) just says "shipped from New York".

But where do people hear that these knives are "good"? Do people buy them just 'cuz they're "pretty"? Is it all "word of mouth" publicity? You can find good knives in many other online and brick and mortar shops - why choose Etsy? Charles Mackay's 1841 book "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds" comes to mind.

Thanks.

I don't see a knife that looks anywhere close to what you have on the Etsy site. On Etsy, all the chef knives are A) Damascus, and B) have brass pins through the handle. I think your friend did not purchase from the Lara site.

Thanks Greg. Here's a similar knife on the Etsy site:

Looks like mine to me - but my eyesight isn't what it used to be ...
