King Pin Question

What are the operational and perfomance indicators of worn king pins?

I put the new bearings on this week, but did not remove the spindles and king pins, as they are another phase of rebuild which I did not have time to undertake at the present.

But I did not want to go fixing something that wasn't really in need of it.

Thanks

HI Brian, The general indication of bad king pins is shimmy from the front wheels. Additionally, with a wheel jacked up when you grab the wheel at the top and bottom and shake it,the wheel will display loosness[ it will rock in and out]Sometimes this takes a good feel to sense it.-FWIW---Keoke

Thanks Keoke.

No shimmy on the road.

But the left has a very slight looseness when manipulated as you indicated.

I think I will just let it go for now. Maybe its a project for next year.

Pump it full of grease to reduce play, but be ready for some squirt of the excess. These can be a mother to get off and should be resleeved by a machine shop with a proper reamer (they are double step with a taper). I will tell you off line which local Bay Area shop NOT to use for rebushing.

Brian, having recently rebuilt the front end, things to look out for are 1) grab the stub axel and see if you can rock it in a vertical twisting motion, this will be the same as tugging on the wheel top and bottom, any movement - worn King pin. 2) try and slide the stub axel up the king pin there should be no vertical slide, a very small amount is OK, any large movement needs to be shimmed out, there the fun begins.

Thanks for all the info.

Wow, what a day to drive. Made up two excuses to take Ixora out today. Wonderful!

Here's a question:

Apple Hydraulics ad says "Kingpin swivel axle rebushed...$40-$80". Does anyone have a comment on their work? Sounds like a good way to go to me.
