One of my students just posted this short video about an hour ago.
He headed out from Shark River NJ 3 days ago and is on route to Bermuda (with his uncle and cousin). They are 350 miles offshore and have hit some pretty rough weather.

I had him a few years back as a student and we are now good friends. He just finished his Masters in mechanical engineering at NJIT.
He's also a vintage car racer (Club Ford).

So don't despair: I know we often hear how bad kids are, but many of today's young people are actually pretty cool.

neat - though I can't say I'd be crazy about the Atlantic in December

Very cool. I would not attempt it since I get "rubber legs" on heaving boats.... speaking of heaving, that's what I'd be doing!
A great adventure for sure.

Reminds me of THIS intrepid bastage.

I think that is the weather that went through here yesterday.

Looks like pretty good wind. He's got the main reefed and the jib is half-furled.

Control. Well practiced, too.

I learned to sail on Lake Erie, doesn't sound like much but it was some of the best 'early discipline training' a person could ask for.

I've been blessed with two "pretty cool" kids. Both have master's degrees. One is a nurse practitioner, and the other works for the DEA. I think for the most part, today's kids turn out just fine. Unfortunately, it's the few bad ones that get all the press.

Yeah... it's sad alright, the rest of the bad ones can't even make the local paper. :thirsty:

Making some big ocean voyage on a sailboat is one of those back-of-the-mind-bucket-list things I have. I'd settle for an extended schooner tour off the coast somewhere. I don't think I need to round Cape Horn or anything.

Ben - here's a few choices. One mild:

Schooner Zodiac, Pacific North West

And one which could get "interesting":

Sailing to Antarctica

So I figured I'd take a second to brag. I was having one of those "run down just want to take a nap and leave me alone I'm grumpy, dammit!" afternoons and as I was trying to snooze my 3 year old decided to come badger me saying, "war" over and over again (his pronunciation isn't the greatest yet, he was actually saying, "car"). After a half an hour of trying to ignore him and snooze I gave up. He grabbed my hand and dragged me out to the driveway to work on my Jensen Healey. The car's been a snoozin' for a while so we had tried waking it up the other day but eventually stopped because of a leakey carb.

Jensen (yep, that's his name) stood there with me, holding and handing tools as I removed the carb. He then sat at the bench in the garage with me watching as I fixed the carb. We then reinstalled it and now the car runs without any leaks (of the gasoline variety).

My boy turned a rather grumpy afternoon into one of the best I've ever had.

Kids are awesome!

Those are the kind of stories that should be making the papers. Good for the both of you, glad to hear it!

Jody:
Great story. I have some like that with my kids, but they are older now.
I hope to have some stories like that with my grandchildren.

By the way, Graham (my student who posted the video above), has reached Bermuda and been there for a couple of days.
Today he is heading out for Anegada in BVI; a trip of 850 nm that should take about 8 days.
I know that he and his uncle have talked about a trip around the world in this boat.

This is the boat he's on:

"Wooden Ships" went off in my mind, Nial!

Just a little update on Graham.

He's in Jost Van Dyke (in the British Virgin Islands) today. They made the 850 nm trip across open ocean from Bermuda to BVI with no problems (but some big waves).

Nice, now ya got me thinking
of booking a sailing trip

ON about kid.

So I am standing in the garage, my 55 chevy is out back warming up so I can go to the car show and let everyone see what I did over the winter.

My 4 year old comes up to me and say with a questionably look on her face
"daddy, is your car supposed to be on fire?"
As I look in amazement at her, realizing to myself that she doesn't know how to tell a joke yet, I grab the fire extinguisher and dive out the garage to the car. Yup the car is running, and flames are licking up through the seems of the fender and hood. I open the hood, get flashed, and start with the extinguisher, put out the fire, it starts up again, put it out, starts back up,and the car is still running. so I turn off the key, and put out the fire. Then I start examining the damage and what caused the fire in the first place. I had a plastic inline fuel filter that ruptured by the carb, and it was spitting out gas onto a sparkplug cap that was cracked and arching on one of the headers. Resulting in fried wiring and a burned paint job.

Moral,
kids don't lie at age 4, they are pretty straight forward, you bet you can believe what they tell you.
