A friend who keeps a dozen milk cows asks -

Could I keep two of his milk cows for a few months while he rebuild the cow lot fencing?

My concerns: if the cows push down my fencing and get loose, who's responsible for the damage they might cause? Cows are big critters, and can easily push down fencing, break through gates.

Friend will feed, water, and cleanup, but lives about 20 min away. He's not "renting the land", as that would turn my property into an "ag business" per town ordinances.

An analogy: if you keep your buddy's dogs while he's on vacation, and the dogs break loose, run from your property, and bring a bit of havoc to your neighborhood and cause damages ...

Your thoughts?

Thanks.

My thoughts are that you could be enjoying some good steak dinners

This situation reminds me of one of my own issues. My wife and I keep a vacation cabin up in the mountains about 40 miles from town. When friends and acquaintances find out about it, the first question is always "Do you rent it out?" The answer is "No, we don't". At that point people become weird. Some just cannot take that as a valid answer. I get multiple questions, probing for an explanation. "How big is it?" "What do you DO with it?" "Why don't you sell it?" etc. etc. etc. Having people go sleep in MY bed, use MY shower, have access to MY closets, etc. is just a bit closer friends that I really want it life. They would think I was weird if I ask to sleep in THEIR HOUSE while they were away on vacation. ...J.D.
