I will be buying Chrome spokes for my A when the budget allows... however...

My original painted spokes are looking a bit worse for wear and I want to paint them...

Not to be anal (I think I am) ... what is a close original grey paint that I can use in the interim... I take exception to silver paint and want to stay close to original for the time being.
 
There isn't an exact original color. The shade of silver varied a bit from batch to batch. Moss is pretty close on one end of the spectrum and Mercedes Silver on the other. I've heard Eastwood sells a good shade as well.

I was going to order the paint from Moss but, with shipping costs, I just wanted to visit my local Home Depot and buy a similar Rustoleum color.

My originals seems to be grey in color so I assumed that grey was the color of choice....
 
I'm in the middle of (lighly) sand blastng and re-painting the painted wires on my MGB.

Obviously, this is a matter of taste, but I've also heard there's no "standard" colour.

In fact, I experimented with various colours just last week and I found the Rustoleum Industrial Aluminum (it's a flat, silver color...not shiny), works for me. It's in Home Depot or Loewes.

My ONLY concern is that I do not want to paint the wheels so that they look like a 'cheesy' chrome wannabe....

By the way... I am assuming Airplane -- Aeronca -- great plane -- Bought a Luscombe with my Dad back in the 60s -- then had to cancel the deal when Uncle Sam picked my number....
 
Rustoleum silver was a VERY close match to the original back in the Old Days. Haven't seen if they changed it since then.

I will stop by the Home Depot this evening and buy said paint.... I will let you know if it works.... I know who to blame if it doesn't.... :smirk:

The ~original~ finish was not "chrome" lookin'.

Dunloop didn't bother with "bling". :thumbsup:

O M G ... That is spectacular. Thanks for the pic...

I got my license in '68 and merrily flew 1600 hours in various Cessnas, Pipers, Bonanzas, Rockwells, and my favorite - Mooneys...

Then my heart got mad and attacked me.... then a quad bypass... The FAA doesn't take kindly to pilots with bad tickers... so my piloting days are now over.. and D*(# I miss it....

You may already know this, but anyway:

If you really want to fly, you still can, with the new FAA SportPilot license.

No medical required.

Just an automotive driver's license and you're IN!
Max weight plane is 1320# so you are limited to J-3s, Champs, Luscombes and a bunch of the new Euro-sportplanes. Since these are still real planes, it's waaay better than flying an ultralight.

I have used Rust Oleum to repaint a few sets of wire wheels, after a thorough cleaning of course, I uses their rusty metal primer followed by the top coat with your color of choice, the suggestions made are good.

Anyway these applications have worn very well, with no rust through peaking out at the nipples or anything after many years, and it stays stuck as well, no flaking etc. Good stuff for this purpose.
 
SO OK...

I bought a can of medium grey Rustoleum and painted the wheels... May not be original but, wow, does it look nice...
