TR2/3/3A just removed the pistons/sleeves... can't believe she ran as well as she did!

Check out the pistons and sleeves. I cannot believe this car ran as good as it did. the amount of sludge built up around the last piston (near the battery) was just crazy. 2 of the pistons were heavily damaged with all rings broken on both. These are definitely TOUGH little engines. Thanks for all of the advice that everyone sent me over the past two days! IMAG2247[1].jpgIMAG2248[1].jpgIMAG2254[1].jpgIMAG2252[1].jpg

well... i think i'm going to go with the standard. i'm not really looking for any more power or torque or anything. just looking to drive around without overheating and smoking. lol... any suggestions or input on why I should go larger vs. standard? i'm loving every bit of this so any input you might have, please send it my way. thanks!

Well, standard 83mm and sometimes 86mm piston & liner sets are often times not as easily available as the 87mm sets. They also usually carry a heftier price tag. That said, it looks like Moss has all three listed within about $10 of each other. Whether or not they have the 83mm in stock, you'd have to call to find out. I see they also carry the 89mm, but they are always much more expensive. Besides, I believe you need a different head gasket with those.

Personally, I'd go with the 87mm set. A little increase in displacement and compression. Overheating will not be a problem if the cooling system is in good shape.

I installed the 87.5mm piston/liner set from BPNW. I did not shave the head (only skim to clean up surface). I believe my calculated compression ration was around 9.1:1 or so, with the bigger bores. I probably have 1,500 miles on her and she's running beautifully on premium gas. I have an aluminum radiator and my electric fan only comes on when in stop and go traffic. Cooling has been a non-issue, even when it's north of 100 degrees out and I'm in stop-and-go.

I am using the Moss 83's. They have 4 rings, but weigh less than the 87's I checked that had 3 rings.
