Driver safety has come a long way since these days, thank God!

Old time theory back in the 30s was, it was safer to be ejected from the car than be strapped in and only sissies used roll bars. Some of this is graphic, but it stresses the importance of driver safety and how far it's come.

Amazing, really, how such dangerous racing was tolerated in the day. No seat belts or harness, the only way you'd survive a crash was if you were lucky enough to be ejected just at the right millisecond before a rollover.

Technology changes, and probably some day 50 years hence racing enthusiasts will be saying the same thing about today's sport.

The dangers are inherent, but safety must always be job #1 in racing.

Chilling video, I'm sure several were killed in those sequences.
