....I crawled under the '74 for another looksie. Are there any differences in OD's from year to year?

There were two different units fitted over time, IIRC. Not sure of the change date, tho.

Two types and two generations were used in Bs.

The D-Type were used in earlier cars, identified most easily by their external solenoid, then the LH type that came along later. The LH is divided into two subtypes, the Black label and the Blue Label. The blue label as installed is most easily identified by the fact that they were activated only in top gear instead of third and top gear as was the black label. Of course the most positive identification can be made by looking at the color of the name plate, as in the black one on yours. There is supposed to be a weakness inherent in the blue label units specific to a thrust washer failure, but IMHO for normal everyday use any design weakness is overshadowed by how the transmission is treated and maintained. Can you use the later type in earlier cars? ie; can I put the '74 in my '67
 
Different gearboxes. You ~could~ do it, but it'd mean hacking the '67 to accomodate the wider gearbox... Were it mine I'd not do that. Look for an "age appropriate" O.D. instead.

EDIT: BTW, did you put your shifter in "right-way-'round"?
 
Shifter is still in bass ackwards and the '67 has already been "bashed" fer a '68 gearbox. Fret not... I'm ain't a runnin out to the garge to do the swap just yet.

Yes, you can install a late transmission in an early car. It's done now and then. In fact, my '67 GT has a '72 LH OD transmission. It retains the bent shift lever from the early non-OD unit which it came with.

The lever position is a couple inches off so you have to lengthen the opening in the tunnel. You may also have to slightly widen the tunnel in a couple places with a large mallet.

Hmmm... I was considering a "custom" console with oil temp, clock and volt meter... a vacuum gauge may be a better choice than oil temp.... Thanks Steve! I ~LIKE~ it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That '67 parts car I have had a late-model o/drive installed at one time. I can send you a picture of the cutting that was done to make it fit. Not exactly a professional job, if you want my opinion. Without a console, don't know how one would cover up the new hole.

The console on my '67 is a period 60's Amco accessory. They are still out there if you look hard enough. I saw a NOS one on eBay a few months back.

The accessory gauges are mounted to a panel which is covering the old speaker hole. I don't like the looks of it and plan to return to the stock octagon speaker assembly, and then mount the gauges in a period Smith's triple gauge mount either under the dash or in an enclosure on top of the center console. Unfortunately the PO cut up the speaker console pretty bad when he rigged up the gauges. Back then the speaker console wasn't hard to come by like it is now.

The elongated hole in the transmission tunnel will be covered with carpet anyway, so you don't have to worry about it. If you're crafty you could weld in a patch panel to reduce the hole to its proper size.
