Junkpile B build

Some of you may have seen Frankenstang's junkpile spitfire build project on the Triumph forum (If not, look it up). Since I live just a few miles from the spit project, I get to see it regularly. It has inspired me to start a junkpile MGB build thread. I am in the process of finishing a V6 installation for a friend. Payment is "Get enough parts from all my cars to build one for yourself". My son wanted the stock roadster so we are building it together. It is a '69. There is also a '69 GT donor car, so we have collected most of the parts that are peculiar to this year. This includes good seat frames with the square headrests, and an uncracked 69 steering wheel(And the freaky nut that holds it on). The car was media blasted, but sat outside for a year or two. Fortunately the northern Colorado climate is slow to produce rust. This evening I cut out the doglegs from the rear fenders for replacement. Inner sills are good, so this ought to be easy. The floor of the car still has original paint on it, so no issues there. Donor engine and trans are ready to pull from another car. Hydraulics will be attacked next. More to come soon.
Here are the first pics.

Very solid car! Hardly a junkpile if you ask me! Hardly anything, actually, but a nice project nonetheless! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif Just kidding. Good luck! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

looks like BinaBox revisited almost... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

sounds like you have a lot of fun head of you! good luck!

I think this one is going to end up light grey, like BinaBox. We probably won't stress as much over the exact shad though.
What is the little blue car sitting next to the Whit B in the picture? Looks like an Elf or a Hornet.
Bruce (a red Elf driver)

It's an Elf Mk III that showed up for the Memorial Day drive in Malibu, CA. I thought it was a neat little car. The owner has a "Autopia" sticker in the window /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

And what is "Autopia"

the Disneyland go-kart ride. You know, the one where the cars are stuck on a guide rail to prevent the drivers from running into each other.

I thought it was humorous because my lady co-workers are always calling my B an "Autopia" car, and this guy actually had an Autopia sticker in his window. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

OK, gotta get one for my Elf now.

Looks like a great base for a project.

I'm doing a Rat Rod project with a '73 Midget when the race car gets squared away.

Mine'll be more of a "hose it off--paint it--drive it" deal.
I'll make sure all the safety stuff is OK, but othewise, I just want to *drive* it....the ~next~ guy can restore it. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

G'luck with your's!

A little progress on the Junkpile B. Got the rust cut out of the doglegs. Patch panels fitted and ready to weld in. Pressure washed and the whole thing generally cleaned up. Engine, and trans pulled from donor car. A little other sanding and it will be ready to paint as soon as welding is done.
Hope to have lots of progress over the next few days.

Then maybe time for a little rafting!

Is the steering wheel in the rear for the backseat drivers? LOL

Some people just can't ride on the left side unless they have a steering wheel to hold on to.

Finally got the doglegs welded in. A good thing is that while this has been going on, the rest of the bodywork has been moving along. A little more work here and we'll be ready for paint. The new owner will turn 20 on Saturday the 23rd, so I'm hoping to get it painted by then.

Re: Junkpile B build--Good Weekend!

Junkpile B Build made some progress in the last 48 hours. Etch primer, Filler primer and paint. We also got the Engine/transmission dropped in too. Looks to be on the road soon! It is not white, but very light grey. Looks white until it is next to a white car. First picture, after paint, before engine. Sits a little high in the front! Second picture it has an engine under the bonnet.

Re: Junkpile B build--Good Weekend!

Hey Bruce -
Looks great! Miles ahead of where it was when I saw it. Sidebar - Front rubber bumper is great. Hammered out the bend in the top bar, and it's sitting aside so I can do a little (okay, maybe a lot) more front end work before re-mounting it. Thanks again for that!
