Today I brought my 1996 Jag XJ6 (121k) in to the dealer to get it's 3000 mile oil change, and I also got the radiator fluid changed. It's summer, and I don't know when the coolant was changed last by the previous owners. It was also a sick pasty green color.

I take my car there because they use the OEM oil, filters, etc. for my car, and I simply don't have the space, the tools, or a place to dispose of the waste fluids. So, because they are a dealer, they did the "safety check".

$15460 for parts, no labor or taxes.

I almost laughed at the lady, but I refrained myself. It's a 16 year old car, and I can get everything 10x cheaper myself.

Sorry you removed the Flickr link!

I see the $15460 (and the "left and right $990, leaking fluids $275, and pulley $500"), but there's no tax. Was this the estimate for what they *think* should be done?

Yikes!

Tom

$15460 for parts?

Sounds like an exchange rate issue.... :yesnod:

Haha, yes, this is a tenative parts bill. Not exact, not labor, not taxes. The sunroof dosen't work, so what they just wrote was "Sun Roof, Inop, $2710".

I could buy 3 X300s, their worth about $4k according to KBB.

Can you say "bend over sir"?

The only thing I will allow them to actually work on and order is the body-panel left front blinker and a bulb from the top rear brake light (the brake light on top of the rear seat). The rest I will piece out myself over time and get done by a shop I get a deal at, like a sane person.

They quoted me $275 for a power steering hose, and depending on which piece, it's $70-200 on Jagbits.com, and Jagbits is a little hefty on their own prices.

Thanks TK. So you just asked them to take a look and tell you what it needs? Was it the first time you've had it "professionally" given the once-over?

Edit: I'd probably go for a 1955 Mark VII myself ...

T.

Well, most dealerships will look the car over during an oil change.

I didn't even ask them to poke around, because the car is 16 years old, I bought it for $2900, and I knew that it would have <span style="font-style: italic">many</span> things wrong with it.

The car has been poked and prodded by a body/paint shop that worked on the front end, and a trusted auto shop that looked at the car twice. Niether of the two said "by the way, your car is quite broken."

According to the dealer, I "need" the sunroof, cup holder, front and rear brakes, basically the entire front suspension, the power steering hose, the clock on the climate control, the door pivots, and the belt is loose. I already knew about the brakes, and that's another project of mine. Remember, I really "need" that cup holder, the car might explode suddenly if I don't fix it! :wall:

Yes, this year alone there has been SEVERAL deaths due to faulty cup holders.

You COULD end up with really hot coffee in your lap, and we all know how THAT ended!!

You should have washed the <span style="font-style: italic">"I'm a sucker"</span> sign off of your forehead BEFORE going to the dealer :jester:

Well, I don't eat or drink in my Jag. Ever. And I don't drink coffee. So I guess I'm safe. :driving:

And no, their not just making me cough up. While I was reading <span style="font-style: italic">Car and Driver</span> in the lobby, the service lady had to placate a husband and wife that had to get an alternator for some car, and they wanted $2000. The service lady managed to "find" one for around $800.

We'd call that li'l exercise a "wallet biopsy". :jester:

Car and Driver?
I would expect Wall Street Journal or Esquire in a Jag place
