Elk may be territorial.

There is a 10 - 12 point buck along the Capital Crescent hiker/biker trail that has shown similar traits. The Capital Crescent is supposed to be the most heavily utilized hiker/biker trail in the nation, so you can see the kind of disruption this buck could case. Earlier in the year, an aggressive horned owl on the same section of trail had no qualms swooping down on unsuspecting joggers and pedestrians, often making away with their hats.

We have a big buck that wanders into our yard sometimes -- we give him wide berth!

I was once challenged by a big antlered buck in my backyard. He stared at me and pawed the ground. I had a golf club in my hand - 7 iron - and I pointed it at him and said "If you're thinking what I think you're thinking, you're going to get this golf club right on your nose". I stared him down. He snorted once, turned away and trotted off. Since the coyotes have come to town, the deer seem to be fewer. I'm not unhappy. They eat everything in sight.

What's that old saying?

the jogger doesn't need to be faster than the elk......just faster than the dog.

There's a similar parable involving a bear and a fellow traveler. "I don't need to outrun the bear, I just need to outrun YOU!"
