HD8 Carbs. on my 65 3000 are sucking air at the linkage to Carb. points. I proved this by the old Carb. cleaner spray method, big RPM increase when spraying where rods enter Carb.
49000 miles on the motor. Also can't seem to get a good idle and intermittant puffing out Carbs. I want to send them out for a "real"re-build. I heard Joe Curto is good. I would appreciate any input on his work before I send them out. As a note, I ordered 2 floats from him, got them promtly, however one of them has already gas logged,(1 week) Wonder if he uses the best parts. Thus this post....Thanks guys.

He the best twenty-some (20+) years ago, and he's still around.

I had him rebush some carbs for me and I was completely satisfied, so I'm sure he'll stand behind his work and the float he sold you.

He rebuilt my carbs.
The man knows his SU's.
The day I drove to his shop, I stalled around the corner and couldn't get her started. Joe walked around the corner with a screw driver and made a few adjustments to get me to his place. There he tweeked a little more to get me home without charging me. I drove back the next week with the carbs in a box and he did a total rebuild. Nice guy. I trust him.

Floats seem to be poorly made, probably from Asia. I think you are lucky if 30% don't fail in a short period of time. However, I think they are virtually the same from all sources. Wish that wasn't the case, but the fact is that most replacement parts for our LBC's are made cheaply.

Hi There Motorhead,

I recently bought a `57TR3. My plan is to get the Carbs re-built by Joe. I`m just curious as to how much he charged you for a full re-build or does anyone know "Approx" what the cost would be (Worst Case Scenario).

Thanx Much,

Russ

Hello,
if you discuss about the best, you can`t dicuss it without BOB.

https://www.bobs-services.de/

I know that BOB live far away, but he is a UK guy who rebuild your carb as Made in Germany ...also the prices are Made for Germany...

Bye michel - who like BOB´s real practically experience, read the details

I know nothing about Joe other than reputation, which is very good. I wrote to make two observations. First, any puffing back through the carbs could be a sign of other problems. Make sure your ignition, timing and valve adjustments are correct before you fire up the car with the nice new carbs bolted up. If you can do the rebuild yourself, Apple Hydraulic cna rebush the carbs too.

Thanks for all the input. As it turns out the floats were not the fault. I assume the needle go stuck. I will be sending them to Joe this week.

I don't visit here often, because these are not the engines or carbs I noramlly work with, but will put a good word in for Curto, he's alot more than just carb rebuilder, he is who supports most carb builders like me, and others in this country and outside, as he manufactuers most of the rebuild parts we use, and many of the special tools like the piloted reamers we use are custom made by Joe as well. Bottom line Joe has has forgotten more about about SU carbs than most of us will ever know. As far as backlogs, anyone worth their salt in this business has one.

Ditto to what Hap said. I needed a couple special SU needles for my vintage racing Healey and caught Joe on the phone as he was closing up shop, he said he would send them out to the west coast asap and bill me later. He did and I paid him right away with a big Thank You as well.

Dougie
