Mark your calendars. The Jim Thorpe Classic Run is back for its seventh year! The run is open to any car, 25 years or older.

The date: Saturday, September 22, 2012 (rain date: September 29, 2012)

Deadline to register or request refund: September 19

The meeting place: The Cracker Barrel (21 Industrial Drive in Hamburg, PA - near the intersection of I-78 and Rt. 61)
Departure time: 10:00am (driver's meeting at 9:55am Please arrive by at least 9:45)

Join us for a scenic cruise to the quaint town of Jim Thorpe, PA. We'll enjoy a drive along some back roads in Berks, Schuylkill, and Carbon counties in Pennsylvania. Along the way, we'll have a couple stops for lunch, and a scenic overlook of Jim Thorpe before we roll into town for the climax of the drive. Lunch will be a BBQ at the farm my parents own along the route. It's a great place to stretch our legs and get some group shots of the cars. Lunch will be $7 per person and will include your choice of hamburgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken, chips, soda, water, and some of the best ice cream you've ever had for dessert!

For pictures from previous year's runs and additional Jim Thorpe, click here.

Registration forms can be downloaded here. All registration forms must be received by September 19, 2012. Money is also refundable until September 19, 2012. After that time, I will have already begun spending that money to buy supplies.

If you've never been to Jim Thorpe, you are in for a treat. It is a small town originally built up around the coal industry, and famous for it's gravity railroad that, at one time (way back when), made it the second largest tourist destination in the country, behind Niagara Falls! After a decline, the town has been reborn once again as a tourist destination, offering quaint shops, restaurants, and B&B's. Tour the Packer Mansion - the house that inspired the haunted house in Disney World. Or make a weekend of it and enjoy some of the biking or whitewater rafting that draw thousands to the town each year. Like trains? Take one of the scenic train rides that leave from town at numerous times during the day.

Directions to the Cracker Barrel for those coming via I-78:
- I-78 to exit 29 for Rt. 61 N toward Pottsville
- Right at light onto Jetson Dr
- Bear right after the gas station (on your right) and follow that road to the Cracker Barrel

What you need to bring:
1. Two way radio - to receive instructions/information or ask for help if your car decides to be tempermental!
2. Full tank of gas (you can top off near the starting point)
3. $5 for parking in Jim Thorpe. Sometimes they charge, sometimes they don't, but be prepared.
4. Spare parts, oil, coolant, whatever other fluids may leak out of your car, tools, a sense of humor, and some patience. Hopefully nobody will have any problems but it helps to be prepared.

Long distance travellers:
For those who'd like to drive out the night before, there is a hotel just up the road from the Cracker Barrel:

Microtel Inn & Suites
(610) 562-4234
50 Industrial Dr
Hamburg, PA 19526

I suggest making reservations at least a couple weeks in advance. The Microtel is the ONLY hotel in the area and it fills up with people looking to head across the highway to Cabelas.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me or post in this thread. Hope to see you in September!

I'm opening this up to a few other local car clubs this year so hopefully we'll get a nice variety of cars... Fiat/Lancia, Citroen, Opel, and Delorean.

Awesome! It looks like the date of the JTCR lines up nicely with a "blank" spot on the MG club calendar! Looking forward to participating this time around...even though my registration form wasn't in to you in January!

Best regards,
Marty

Marty! Thank goodness. I was beginning to think something was wrong. Here it is July and I don't have your registration yet.

In fact, I hate to tell you, but someone beat you as the first person to register this year. A gentleman with a TVR 2500M just sent his in last week.

I'm still buried in my never-ending house project and never got a chance to email you about coordinating our dates so when I finally got around to posting this I checked out your club's calendar to make sure I wasn't conflicting with anything (at least anything that was posted at the time).

Shaping up to be a nice size group this year. I just got forms today for a TR3 and an Opel GT. Picked up a couple other Spitfires and Volvos the last couple weeks too. Should be a nice variety this year.

Hi Jerseygirl,

I just sent in my registration for your little tour, the photos from last year look great. One question though, on the webpage it mentions bringing folding chairs for the lunch. How the heck do you propose one fit a folding chair, let alone two, into a TR6?? Or into any LBC for that matter?

Cheers,
Tom

Hi Tom. Sorry for the slow response. I was away on vacation. Glad you've decided to join us. I don't know what kind of folding chairs you have, but I have no trouble fitting two folding chairs and a small folding camp table in the trunk of my Spitfire. However, if it's that big a problem, I do have some extra chairs available at the BBQ. I only have a handful of spares though, which is why I suggest people bring their own.

I was just kidding actually. My real concern isn't the folding chairs, but we're planning on spending the night in a B&B in Jim Thorpe, and it's the two folding chairs and her "overnight" bag.
See you next week!

Sorry I misunderstood.

Well, we're sitting at 19 cars right now. I'm really excited about the response this year.

The forecast is looking a little iffy right now, but I'll make any final decisions about postponing on Friday and will email everyone if we're going to the rain date or may just a late start.

OK everyone, we're on for tomorrow.

Yes, I know there's a chance of rain in the afternoon, but Accuweather also shows rain for next Saturday as well. It's been a tough choice because I'm sure some people won't come with the chance of rain. At the same time, if I postpone to next weekend, it could still rain, and I already know that I will lose several cars due to conflicts with other events. I'd also hate to have a repeat of last year, where I postponed and we got rained out the second weekend too!

If it makes everyone feel better, I'll be driving a Spitfire with a poorly fitting top, so if it does rain, I'll be as wet as or wetter than everyone.

So pack your rain jackets and put some Rain-X on that windshield. I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow.

Well, it turned out to be a beautiful day for the run despite a very dark and cloudy start in the morning. 16 brave souls came out despite the gloomy morning, and we were rewarded with no rain, and in fact, sunshine by the afternoon. It was a nice mix of cars this year. The Opel guys enjoyed themselves and said they hope to be back next year.

Sadly, I have to report that after being a bit cranky yesterday during the run, Baldrick is now completely dead. He soldiered through yesterday but this morning, I made it about three miles from my parent's house when the engine started making some noise. I turned around to go back but didn't make it. The car died about a mile from the house. It wouldn't run at all unless my foot was all the way to the floor at all times. Called AAA. In the meantime, we decided to take inspiration from Sharon's problems in the TR3 during the run, and clear out the fuel filter. I didn't really see anything come out, but we put it back together and decided to give it a shot. I got it to run (badly) and took off for the house. At this point I had almost no power. By the time I made it back to the house, I was in first gear and the car barely crawled up the driveway. I took my foot off the gas, it stalled and I rolled it into the barn, where it will now sit until we can figure out how to get it home.

Anyway, thanks to everyone who came out. I hope to see you all on next year's run!
