I've got a pencil shaped car part made of plastic, and I just snapped it in "two," being too rough. It's no longer made. I intend to glue it back together with JB Weld. Does that stuff do much on plastics?

My plan is to follow the JB Weld with a fiberglass "patch" on the back side that can't be seen.

Any thoughts on that process as well. I realize fiberglass doesn't bond well to certain plastics, but a think a hard plastic should be OK. thx

You can get epoxy that is designed for plastic. I believe locktite is one brand that makes it.

Another angle: if you can, you might drill a thin hole inside each half, then put a "reinforcer" rod (wood? steel?) like a nail, down inside, then glue it back together.

Just a thought.

I've always had mixed luck with epoxies and "gluing" things together. As long as there's no side to side stress, usually works. But I would do as suggested and drill a hole in each half and put a bit of rod in to span the joint. Drill one side, dab a bit of paint or such around the hole, put the two together and then apart. Should leave a mark on the undrilled side showing where a matching hole would go.

I would definitely go with an epoxy intended for plastic rather than JB Weld. Although fine stuff it is best on metal.

I have worked with plastic epoxy before and I highly recommend it. It saved me several hundred dollars in front end plastic parts and is fairly easy to work with. I would suggest some kind of support like several have suggested here.

Weld-On #16 for plastics works very well as a plastic glue for my needs.
