Jamming Starter on New engine

Help me get over my depression. After I blew the head and found I had a damaged piston from a broken top ring, shipwright's disease set in and I embarked upon making my '66 MGB-GT a reliable daily driver once again. So I rebuilt the engine and head, had the tranny rebuilt, got new SU's, and even followed "Dr." Doolin's advice and replaced the starter and generator (both rebuilt). Of course I had the flywheel resurfaced and the ring gear replaced.
So imagine my disappointment when, after 500 miles, the starter jammed in the ring gear. I've removed the starter, cleaned and oiled the pinion assembly, replaced the starter solenoid, but it still is jamming every once in a while.
Moss, of course, assures me that their starter rebuilder is of the utmost quality. Since I've been working on this for several years, the starter is quite past it's warrantee.... :-(
Any suggestions? What do I look for?
Am I doomed to writing off the starter and getting one of the new high-torque starters?

Wipe off all the oil you can (in fact use some carb cleaner to get inside between the gear and the shaft), there should be extreamly little to none left. Just about the same amount left on you weapon when you go to the field.

I am trying to remember the ditty that they taught us in boot camp.....

Something like,

This is my weapon,
this is my gun
this is for fighting,
this is for fun....

pointing to the appropriate accoutrement...

Hopefully I won't be censored here... :smirk:

Did the new ring gear get installed with the bevel to the rear of the engine? I got one back from the machine shop once with the gear reversed. I install them myself now.

i had the exact same issue with my 63. I never completely understood what happened. Research of mine indicates that the starter design is somewhat flawed(long explanation) and that this unit is unique to the car, thus not many have been made. Most rebuilds are getting tired.

This issue happens to some but, not all of the cars. However, a gear reduction starter fixed in permanently.

So there is light at the end of the tunnel. Just another $200 and an hour to put it on.
