Jaguar Valve Settings

Hello E Type Owners.

Two years ago I purchased a Series ll. The engine had been completely rebuilt by the previous owner with pictures as proof. On the Exhaust valve cover is attached a sticker that proclaims the valve settings should be .012 and .014. My shop and owners manual says; .004 and .006 for normal driving. This engine was not set up for racing so what gives?

Upon checking the intake valves only, I come up with between .008 and .010 after about 30,000 miles on the engine. It seems to me, that would indicate the valves were indeed set at .012 and my measurements would allow for normal valve recession.

Can anyone shed light on this?

You posted this is the "Forum Navigation Help" section. I am moving it to the Jaguar forum. The forum you posed in is for asking questions about navigating you way around the forum.

You need to research the change point for the valve clearances. I think the change coincided with use of a parabolic cam late in the S2 production.

I would not rely on the owners manual - these did not always keep pace with production changes.

The sticker may be a better indicator though reproduction stickers are sold and someone could have used one incorrectly.

Early S2 cars had the clearances stamped on the data plate, so I'm guessing this is a later car - possibly 1970?
