Hello Steve,
I have long been amused by the manufacturers that are now making use of aluminium in their cars. A steel bodyshell is not that a significant part of the total car's weight (I'm talking the luxury mass produced cars) It's all the junk that they add to make them saleable that mounts up, toys in reality. As for repairing them when they are crashed? what is the cost? I don't believe that they are making engineering progress but it sounds good in their advertisements.
I once owned an aluminium bodied car, engine block and head also aluminium, it weighed nearly 30 hundredweight!! It's only 'modern' gizzmo was electric windows.

Good point! As you said, it looks good in the advertisments. I believe that it was Audi with the first aluminium-bodied luxury car with the A8 that set the trend. It must be cheaper to produce or something! Anyhow, the premise there was that it was a totally recyclable car, something that the Germans are very big on.

I don't see the connection between aluminium and recycling, it is no better than steel. If it is an environmental benefit that is sought, surely Porsche's concept some years ago of a car for life is far better (Also taken up by Aston Martin).
By the way, BeeJay, yes I'm with you and isn't that a totally environmentally sound system, a rusting car is returning to the natural state that it was first found in.

you have to remember that steel, or aluminium for that, doesn't come straight out of the ground! They both go through a process (or several) to get to sheet. I don't know for sure, but the environmental issue is probably about production not recycling!
I am in the body repair business in the UK and the way the repairs issues are being sold here makes me laugh! The manufacturers are telling the insurance companies that special departments have to be set up or the cars have to go back to main dealers. I have been welding C's D's and Cobra's for years now without 'special departments. Just take a look at some of the old pictures from Browns Lane of the 'fifties!
