TR2/3/3A Jacking Without a Wood Block

For all those who think it is not necessary to use a wood block between the jack pad and the car...think otherwise. I just spent over 20 work hours with a hammer/dolly/and filler fixing hundreds of little dents in the front of the TR2 frame. These were not scrapes, so could only have been caused by jacking.

These frames are only constructed of 16 gage steel. That's about 1/2 the thickness of an F150 frame. So, those who are jacking on your frame without a block or some kind'a pad...you are damaging your frame.

Sorry...just venting 20 hours of frustration at DPO's! Over.

I dont like wood much for jacking. I usually spread the load with a chunk of Nylon.
You probably different USA word for this polymer.

I agree that it's ideally better to use something less compressible and/or prone to breaking. Nylon or other such plastics come to mind. For that matter, maybe you could cut a piece of old tire tread?

Very nice work Alan. It looks like you are using techniques similar to the "paintless dent removal" that has grown in popularity over here to remove hail dimples. I will have to research finding nylon hammers.

I thought about using PDR technique on this but you need a shiny finish to see the patterns.

don't use the rocker either, I see quite a few bent rocker spots on my tr4 from jack use.

I use a chunk of old long-pile carpet on the dish of the rolling jack I use in my garage at home. I jack up under the main frame which was painted 24 years ago with 2-part Dupont Imron aircraft and truck paint. The paint is still like it was in 1990 and there are no dings of dents - not even scratches. I never use any jack under the rocker panels (sills). If I need to jack up the car out on the road, I use the original jack in the hole under the floor seats as they were designed for that. Any scissor jack can slip and the TR will fall.

Talking of not lifting the car by the sills…

When I showed interest in my TR3A offered for sale by a well known clasic cars dealer in USA, and asked for more photos, I got among them the one I attach below.

This picture helped me deciding to buy the car … the sills and the floor couldn't be in a very bad condition….

those who are jacking on your frame

Those are strengthening recurve indents. It's weak engineering and certainly bad luck to attempt to remove or cover them up.
