I needed a couple more jack stands today (only have 10!) so I dropped by Harbor Freight.....unitl 10th of next month, they have a pair of 3-ton jack stanss on sale for $11.11! Item #38846.

is that 10 pair, or 10 individual jackstands? I have 4 pair I found out because I have four cars on jackstands currently. Different kinds of projects.

Well Tony, they want $18.99 here on the west coast and they only have 8" bases. Still not a bad price considering they came all the way from China.---Keoke-- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

They're up under the rear of the '68 GT & its high enough for me to remove the driveshaft - 8" base & all.

/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shocked.gif Bibber I never thought about that .You better tell Tony too !-------------Keoke- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

Keoke...I love that Lead...been chewing it off the walls and toys for years...I was going to see if Tony would pick me up 4 sets and carry em around in his car until we met up sometime!!!

I'm going back this week to buy some more of the little things - they'll work perfectly under Midgets!

The buy at HF is the fly swatters. To heck with the stands. Man they zap the bugs.

FLY's? WHO YOU GONNA CALL?

Those things scare the crap out of me. A buddy and I looked at them some time ago. I have 3-ton stands that weigh 3x as much... which leads me to believe the H-F are made from the thinnest, cheapest steel they could find and are barely rated for 3 tons... I think the carboard box they come in weighs more... Maybe they'll be fine for lightweight LBC's, but I often work on cars that weigh a fair amount more... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/nonod.gif

I don't - we each buy according to what we work on! Of course, the "heavier is better" argument disavows all the innovations of modern technology....but with the Chinese it might be valid!

That's strange ... the 3 ton stands I have from HF are actually quite beefy and weigh a fair amount more than the 3-ton stands from another source. And I've had them loaded to over 2/3 rated capacity, with the front of my 25' motorhome; and no sign of problems. (Of course I know all too well that there are no signs of problems until they actually fail ... I keep a collapsed sheet metal stand hanging on the wall as a reminder.)

Of course, HF does sell higher rated stands; and most of the time I prefer the 6 ton ones (which I bought for the rear of the MH). Bigger spread means more stable, plus they are considerably taller, giving more room to work under the car.

Didn't get a chance to look this weekend, but several times I've walked in and found jackstands (and other things) on a "manager's special" not in the flyer or on the Inet.

Well, that just proves one of the other things I've said about H-F: look before buying. As you never really know what you're going to get until you hold it in your hands. I won't say that H-F isn't good for certain things (I have a tranny jack from them that works great for as often as I need it), but I wouldn't use their $12 3-ton stands to support my lawn tractor.

Well, the rear of my '68 GT has been up on the $11.11/pair small HB jack stands since Saturday with no problems! & I'm going under it this afternoon to disconnect the trans mounts!

TR3driver is correct - HB had another larger set of 3T jacks that are way heavier than my big 3T Craftsman jacks (from just lifting them at the store, they feel heavier). I bought some more of the small $11.11/pair HB 3T jacks this morning & weighed one of them. They are also heavier than my small 3T Craftsman jacks (that are the same size as my small HB jacks)!

So, I don't know where the problem is....if I keep posting I guess they didn't collapse on top of me; if you guys don't hear back from me, well........

That's not saying much... all I know is the the H-F stands we looked at in the store were about as heavy as the cardboard they were packaged in.

I don't really care... I have no need for any more light weight stands... I don't have room to store the ones I have now... I could use a set of 12 ton stands, though... not that I have room for them either, but could use them for the Dodge...

Well, considering I've used my small Craftsman jack stands for almost 10 years now without any problems, it attests to their strength. And if weight is the criteria & the HB jack stands are heavier, they should be moreso safe!

I've probably got a dozen sets of jackstands, including the aluminum ones from HF, they've worked fine on Midgets and MGBs. I also got the HF aluminum jack, the bigger one of the two, can't say anything bad about it either, it jacked up my 28ft enclosed trailer to let me change a tire, way more than it rated to do, but it did the job just fine.

I've got the small HF aluminum jack, Hap....& I like it better than my big Craftsman jack...I've been thinking about buying their larger aluminum one; may just do that this weekend!
