General Tech J Type OD Stuck in OD - Fixed

I have been able to fix a J type overdrive that was sticking in overdrive after being driven for 20 or 30 minutes. If left to cool down it would come out of overdrive. I obtained unserviceable solenoid that was behaving in the same way. I applied 12v and monitored the amperage (2.0) and temperature. It worked as advertised at anything below 175 degrees but as it approached 200 it would no longer move to the relaxed position when the voltage was removed. After it cooled down it operated normally. I removed the small circlip from the nose of the valve section cleaning everything, polished the inside of the valve bore and shuttle valve and installed new seals. I repeated my test and had the same results as above. I took it apart again. The return spring measured .55" in length. I progressively stretched the spring until it got to .6". At this point the solenoid worked perfectly after being engaged for more than an hour. I installed this solenoid in my friends car and fixed his problem. I took the solenoid from his car that was behaving the same way and had to stretch the spring out to .68" before it also worked after an hour in the engaged position. The solenoid bodies will heat up to over 200 deg after about 30 minutes so be careful picking one up if you test it this way. The little circlip is a pain to remove and just deforms after a while. I found a good replacement at McMaster-Car pn 99142A330. These clips are about 1/2 the thickness of the originals but snap nicely into the grove in the valve and are plenty strong for the application. I think with this part and the information in the Buckeye Triumph's overdrive article you should be able to solve most of your mechanical problems with the J type solenoids.

Nice information on the OD my car has an overdrive and it does not work or stuck maybe. Fixing the OD is on my list after I get the car broke in, so some more OD information is always nice.
