O.K. gent's here is a question? I have found this used one for about $250.00 U.S.+crateing and shipping for a total of $330.00 U.S. Now the there is not a lot of detail about it yet but is this a good price? If it needs an avg overhaul what the heck would that cost.. Any input would be great. Thanks Zer

Is that for the overdrive unit and transmission? If so, a pretty good price. I looked forever for one when I had my 1500, and eventually paid $800 canadian for one from a guy in Whiterock(not Dick F.). nfortunate thing is that you can't pull a cover off and see the internals.

I just installed a Jtype in my GT6+ and I'm loving it. $330 is a good price for a used Jtype unless it's poor condition. A "light" overhaul may cost $300-$500 or more depending on the parts you need. If it's functional, which can be determined in a bench test before you install it, you may not have to do anything but change the oil.

Here's a good site for uninitiated Jtype users: https://www.buckeyetriumphs.org/technical/JOD/JOD2/JOD2.htm

You can also do a google search with "Laycock de Normanville" or "J-type overdrive" and find a wealth of info, pricing, etc.

Let us know how it goes, and good luck! Also, check back with us on the installation, there are folks here who can help.

Thanks for all the info. Now how do I get this home without the wife seeing it??????? ZER

I believe the prop shaft is shorter for O/D cars - can anyone confirm?

Yes... You'll also need a different speedo cable with the angle drive. And the rear frame support for the overdrive tailshaft.

The propshaft is shorter for the Jtype OD, I think it's 27 3/4" (but not sure!). And, it's best to use a sliding yoke on the end which gives you a little leeway if the new propshaft length isn't perfect.

Re: J type OD prop shaft lenght for 1500 spitfire

Hi All,

I too am looking for information on a prop shaft for a J type OD gearbox. I have one that I have had rebuilt and now ready to install. The only part left is the prop shaft, I need to get the correct lenght on the shaft so I can have the original prop shaft shortened or buy a OD prop shaft. If anyone can help me out with the lenght I would be very greatful.

Thanks, Ray Waters
