How can I tell which type I have?

Thanks, Tinkerman

A post 60000 1960. It did not originally have an OD but the PO bought it and the proper tranny to go with it.(I hope). So what I have is two trannies and an overdrive.

And look at the solenoid: vertical, A type - horizontal, J type.

The A type has a vertical external solenoid.
Not all of them ... Stag A-types have the solenoid mounted horizontal. And since it's shown horizontal in the A-type service manual, I'd guess that either the Standard Vanguard or Triumph Renown also had it horizontal. Some Volvo units are also horizontal.

A more reliable identification is the finned rectangular cover held by 6 bolts on the bottom of a J-type; and the large (over 2") round brass plug on an A-type. Early units had a large hex on the plug, later ones had slots around the edge.

Must be A-Type, have the drain plug with the slots on the side.
