I've Got A Secret - 1964 - Slot car racers

Four young men compete for $5000 (the equivalent of over $38k in today's dollars) in 1964 on "I've Got A Secret".

Good stuff. I got hooked on slot car racing about this same time and I'm still at it. I will be racing in the Nebraska Slot Car
Championship on Sept. 13.

I started with Scalextric tinplate slot cars - my first 2 were a 250F Maserati and 4.5 liter Ferrari F1. The "controllers" were essentially all-on/all-off door bell buttons.

Never won anything, though, except a few races with my cousin.
 
I still have a fairly recent set that a neighbor gave to me. I found the Hot Wheels slot cars were the best among the current HO cars in terms of being fun to race. I also have some vintage Aurora cars, too. Those definitely took a bit more skill to keep on the track and are not nearly as fast. I had to pack the slot car set up away because we needed the room.

Here is my lineup of cars My dachshund Rudy at the time hated the cars and considered them "prey". He'd try to hop up on the table and eat them.

Even Batman & Robin, along with Aunt Harriett and Alfred enjoyed slot car raceways to "forget their worries and have some fun!"

 
When I was a kid there was a slot car track at a local store in the town I grew up in. Most Saturday's kids would rent time on the track to race their cars, and then spend the rest of the week making modifications.
It sure was a lot different being a kid way back then!

How many of you rewound the armatures?

And remember Silastic tires? And spraying lighter fluid on the tires for traction?

We used wintergreen oil.....which soon got banned because it gummed up the track.
 
I did slot cars too when I was a kid. It was very popular. I remember I had a Scarab.

Funny though, I remember parents complaining back then that kids should be spending more time playing outside instead of
hanging out at the slot car track.
 
I've got a pretty good collection of "T-Jets" and Tough-ones. I like the new silicone tires they have now. Great traction for swingin' round those corners.
 
We had a Lotus 18 and a Birdcage Maser. Had to wait for AutoWeek to show up to get the latest F-1 results. Different times, indeed.
