Hello!!

Well I sold my Healey, a beautiful BN1, the car was pristine, my first restored car, I could not cope with the worry every where we went that it might get marked.

So we sold it.

Have bought an MGA 1500, not sure what year, chassis number HDR4342155, was advertised as 1955, is registered as 1957 and MOT'd as 1958!! What year is it?

It was a left hooker and has been converted (I'm in UK) to right hooker. Its a bit scruffy and 'lived in' and was half the money from the Healey and that suits me just fine.

Handbook I got says to use 30 grade oil, bloke in my local MG shop says use 20/50. Which is correct?

Doubtless more questions to follow..

Thanks.

Looks like a May-Sep '57 car...

Welcome to the 'other side'...photos please - we like photos!

I always say go with car's handbook - but, Castrol 20w50 is what I put in all my MG's.

Re: I've come from the dark side, sold Healey/bough

20/50 Castrol should be fine. Congrats on finding a "half-price" LBC you can thrash about in and not be so concerned for the cosmetics... but you KNOW you'll be wanting to have at it after a bit to do it up as it should be. Then p'raps do the whole "twice the price" thing again. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Either grade is fine. 20W-50 is nice because you don't have to worry about extreme cold or hot. Otherwise you will see little difference between the two.

Re: I've come from the dark side, sold Healey/bough

The handbook doesn't say 20w-50 because they didn't have it when the car was made, I would go with 20-50, but 20 weight would be alright if your temp doesn't change much.

At least in the states many 30 weights are non-detergent oils, most multi grades are detergent oils, you do not want to switch back and forth between the two.
