My oldest son has been flying 737's for a cargo carrier for a couple of years now. He recently (few months ago) applied for a position with Southwest Airlines and, after a rather lengthy in-person interview, he was hired. Last night he and his lady friend attended a "welcome" dinner that Southwest hosted for all the new hires and their significant others. This morning all, including the significant others, were given a tour of their training facilities, where Shaun will be spending the next 2 months. One interesting thing that happened is that when he got there he met a lady who was one of his former company's instructors. She apparently had also just been picked up as an instructor for SW. He sent me a few pictures.

Bravo on the success! Anyone who can handle the supers, heavies, mediums, and larges sure has my respect.

Even before that. When he was in grade school he was addicted to MS Flight Simulator, then in Junior High he started flying gliders with CAP. Got his gliders ticket, then started flying Cessna 172 also with CAP. Ended up in ROTC, then went to AF UPT, and flew tankers (135s) for 10 years.

Congratulations!

I have immense respect for a pilot career. It is a “long haul” - no pun intended. After completing the basic training (equivalent to high school and/or college for us “grounded” folks), the additional experience building is incredible. Not to mention the time away from home.

I am reading “Imagine a City” by Mark Vanhoenaker, a 787 pilot who decided later in life to be come a pilot. Great stories.

All the best to your son in the transition!! Those simulators are incredible. Thanks for sharing.
