I'm writing a short piece for the Healey Marque.

I'd like to ask for your help here guys.

What is the color of the BJ8 engine? Is it light green?

What is the engine called? BMC inline 6, 3 liter?

What is the correct term, valve cover?

Are there any British words that are used for any of the items in the engine compartment rather than the words Americans use? Like windscreen/windshield, wing/fender, spanner/wrench, petrol/gas, bonnet/hood.

Is engine compartment the right term, for British cars?

dynamo = generator, shocks are sometimes referred to as dampers I think. The other terms you have referenced are correct I believe, with perhaps the exception of the dog's breakfast surrounding the Healey engine paint, but this has always been a moot point - everything from "steel dust gray"(Clausager)to medium metallic grey green. Liter is often spelled litre, just as Healey is often spelled Healy, which is, as you know, teknikaly incorekt.

Good luck on the article. Should be fun. Afterwards you can have a pint of bitters down at the local (bet you can figure that one out!)

Well, I've always preferred rocker arm cover. 'ain't no valves under there!

Sort of under the hood:


Set screw/grub screw
Driver's side/near side
Passenger's side/off side
Cotter pin/split pin
Freeze plugs/core plugs (Freeze plug of course is just wrong)
Piston pin/gudgeon pin



I'm sure you'll get lots more...

shooting brake refers to a car body(or at least one definition does). Kind of a sports car with station wagon aft.

First time I became aware of it and had it drilled into my gourd was the old Volvo Sports car that "the Saint" drove (good ol' Roger Moore)

He had the P1800 front half of the car, but the rear top was extended all the way back, almost. Kinda of approaching a Kamm back style.

That was so you could load your shotguns, and throw the dog in the back...

Shooting Brake====="A Station Wagon"

Volvo Produced one of their smaller models in the years 1971 - 1973 Known as the :p1800 ES.

I own the 1972 model judged to be the best of the lot. Actually it is a GT but every one calls it a Shooting Brake cuz it look like one :D---Keoke
