a sign of how this week is gonna pooh on me... I just know it...

Got in the B this AM and headed off to work. 1/4 mile down the road I glance at the cluster and notice I'm traveling at a whopping 0MPH.

I guess I have something to do on the car this weekend, besides retopping the dashpot. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif I just HOPE it's a loose connection in the dash. I'm not really feeling like laying on the ground under a car this weekend.

On the upside, I haven't added anymore miles to the 73,000 that's already on the clock since Saturday night... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif
 
Admitedly I know little about the late model cars, but isn't the speedo mechanical? If so, it's probably a broken cable. Could be a broken angle drive also.

Unscrew the cable from the back of the speedo and see if it rotates as you drive. If not, or if the cable pulls out of the housing then it's broken.

Fixed mine twice.....
First time I sent it out to be calibrated.
Found out it read 15 mph too fast.

Kinda freaked the passengers a bit on account of it being right in front of them.
(A loud exhaust, no suspension & "other" noises didn't help inspire confidence either)

Kinda nice now that it doesn't work....
Keeps the complaining down a bit.
(not that you can really hear em much anyway)

Unfortunately, I rarely look at the speedo when I'm in any gear other than 4th. So, I have no clue whatsoever how fast I'm going in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd based on my tach readings. Fortunately, I'm rarely going slow enough to have to stay in 3rd (under 2500RPM constant speed). /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif except for those silly residential areas with speed bumps that'll get ya airborn, that is...

new development... hopped in the B to go home last night and I noticed a new... erm... rattling/clattering while warming up at idle. It went away after driving about a 1/4 mile, and it didn't seem too bad lastnight before the drive home. But this morning it was quite a bit louder. It almost had the pitch of something rattling on the exhaust pipes this morning.

I guess I'm gonna have to crawl under the car this weekend after all...

If I remember correctly (asking a lot from that last brain cell...) Standard MGB, with 3.90 to 1 rear, and no OD, should be 22 mph per thousand RPM in 4th gear. Easy to calculate on the move....
 
I dunno 'bout all that math... I just noticed early in my MGB ownership that the tach and the speedo have the same angle of inclination when in 4th... that makes it easy for me to figure out my speed in 4th /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Ok... I crawled around under the B yesterday. I can happily report that my noisy rattling/clattering is NOT the engine /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif However, it seems that something in my cat has come loose and it rattling around while it's cool. When it heats up it may be possible that what ever is rattling inside that thing expands enough to stop it from rattling. Hence, it stops making noises after driving.

The DOWN side to yesterday's excursion under the car is I haven't fixed the speedo, yet. I did find that the speedo cable was perched precariously on he back of the speedo, and it popped off when i touched it. It forced me to remove the guage and reattach all the wires and stuff. Since it was out i cleaned the fogging off the glass. Now it's super clear compared to the rest of the guages, minus the lint I left on the guage glass... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

QUESTION: Where abouts is the speedo cable attached to the transmission? I ~though~ I found it yesterday, but apparently I found the reverse lights switch instead (electrical wires instead of a mechanical wire).

Secondly, I have one of those service counters under the bonnet of my car. I traced the speedo cable from the speedo to it. Is it possible that the service counter might be malfunctioning and preventing the speedo from giving me readings? And Is it possible to by pass this device using a speedo cable from an older car?

When I had the guage out yesterday, I attempted to turn the wire inside the speedo cable, but it would not turn more than a 1/2 turn in either direction (by hand). I assumed this meant the other end was still connected properly, but apparently I was wrong, because I'm still going 0MPH at 3000RPMs in 4th /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
