Computer failed to start a couple times yesterday. That was the last straw. Bought a new motherboard, CPU and memory. The component manufacturers have been paying attention to the modder crowd it seems. Turns out they are sharing the color formula for their anodizing.

OohHhaaa... MSI has that nifty GUI "tuneable" BIOS, too!!

Noice, Greg!!!

It doesn't show up as well in the pictures, but mine is silver and black. Don't know about better, but they're cooler looking then in the past

This one has been a fantastic workhorse. Processing 60 megapixel images or laser data it'll run all i7 cores at near 100% for hours. I'm planning on building 4 more for image processing, probably in smaller boxes though.

I haven't read the manual yet, but it looks like I can browse the web from the BIOS menu.

You could run the governments of most third-world countries from that BIOS GUI, sir! :jester:

More research required for the internet from the BIOS. I have to install a windows program. I'll look to see if there is a Linux equivalent or maybe Wine will work.

GD65- nice board!!

I love listening to geek-speak. Have no idea what y'all are talking about. Would one of you build me a nice home computer for under a grand? My old Dell is on it's last leg.

It's the GD55. About the only difference is slightly faster Overclocking of the ram for the 65. Mine allows me to use older video cards, so I didn't have to buy that at the moment. I don't really play games that stress systems anymore, so that isn't a big deal for me.

I added a new SSD hard drive to the mix. WOW, what a difference in bootup time. I used to think having 2 10k rpm ultra-wide SCSI drives in a RAID 0 was hot stuff. (OK, that was 12 years ago). Anyway, if you're in the market for an SSD, read the specs. There is a huge difference in speed and fast doesn't mean expensive. Mine is speced at 540mb/sec and is a lot cheaper than another drive rated at 90mb/sec. I musta had a good batch of chips. The read benchmark is faster than the drive is advertised.

It sure is pretty, but it gets hidden in a metal case and no one sees it¡ It would look sharp in a glass case! Ok, I know.

Fortunately, the days of beige boxes with the power button in the back are gone. I have to give Apple credit there for starting that trend. The gamer/modder crowd took it to the next level and you can now buy plexi windowed cases, interior lighting, liquid cooling that glows in black light, etc.

I've two clear sided cases here. This G.P.U. (Garage Processing Unit) is a black case, blue lights. The other is an "electric blue" case, red LEDs.

Silly, but I got 'em as "salvage" from clients. Put new guts in 'em and pressed 'em into service... I hate wasting resources. ;)

Just wound together an i7 Sandy bridge 3.4GHz engined machine for a client. Used a GD-80 MBoard, and 16G RAM.

Sucker is quick. Even with Win7 Pro x64.

...no SSD yet but that may come soon.

That main board has thunderbolt. Did you hook something up to that? I also have a 3.4GHz proc. Unlocked I5 Ivy bridge. The 3570K. 8gig of ram seems to be enough for me. Firefox is hogging 167meg right now with only 3 tabs open. Total is 767meg on Fedora 17 and KDE.

Wish it were mine, th' CEntOS setup would run like lightning.

..and I'm a Gnome guy.

I've heard good things about CEntOS on the Fedora forum too. Fedora worked out well for me for the music aspect. I have another computer I set up as a guitar effects processor. Stanford has a website for audio and music creation. They make an RT kernel for Fedora which is updated constantly. I hear that Gnome will be adding extensions to make their desktop more customizable again.
