It never ceases to amaze me what sells...and buys!

Recently saw a TR3 that was bought by a NOOB to the sport that amazed me. The car was a good 15-footer but up close the thing was just a spray-job over a very rough car. I guess I am too much into details, but this car was not worth $20K. Way too many things wrong with it to pass my muster. Now, the fella is happy with his purchase, but I doubt he had much advice. He shoulda had someone check it out for him first. Don't get me wrong, the car was good for a 50-year-old, but I have recently seen some pretty nice cars go for not much more. By my figure, I think it would take another $20K to make it right. That would make my TR6 worth about $30K, if I can only find the right NOOB.

Yep - and a few years ago I sold my TR3 for a song. Not complaining, really and no sour grapes here, but ya just never know...

His radiator was boiling over and was basically shot. When I told him he needed to remove his apron to remove his radiator, his heart sank.

Yeah, its unfortunate too because that purchase might sour the guy forever to the cars - for the wrong reason. But as much as I laugh at the outrageous prices you see sometimes, once in a while those prices work.

Tom,
I think that is a little harsh. If a person has not dealt with LBCs before, they might think that buying one is just like buying any other used car.

While I would have researched more than it seems that he did, I would not be talking like that about him. I know there are several others on this forum that have made bad purchases and live to pay for it.

I just feel for the guy. Nice guy that he is, I only wish that he had consulted with someone before diving in. The car had some nice touches but the engine bay was painted with a roller and what looked like coal tar epoxy. Wiring was a mess. Radiator needed to come out (he had no idea that the front apron has to come off to accomplish that). I wasn't dissing the guy, just wish he had made a better deal, perhaps with another car. A previous forum member sold his TR3 last year for about the same, and the engine was wonderful! I know, he has my crank. And I saw the receipts. Ted Schumacher built the engine for him. Worth $8K alone. This guy's engine was smoking badly. I just feel for him.

We didn't spend $20K at the start, but I truly empathize with this thought!!!!LOL

Someone tell him about the forum and then I loved the advice to get a shoebox for all your receipts that you NEVER attempt to add up. We will NEVER get the amount of money or time out of our MGB, but once its actually on the road it will all be worth it!!!

Yep, and it won VTR regionals here in Houston as well. It was nice! I was hoping the Captain would show back up in oure club or on the forum after selling it off, but I bet he's having too much fun with his mid-60's vette.
