I spent the last couple of evenings fooling with the 73 Midget I just found and am happy to report that it is up and running just fine after a long sleep.

I changed the oil and filter, added a new gas filter, charged the battery, cleaned and gapped the spark plugs, checked the points, put a couple gallons of fresh gas in it and it started almost right away. It ran a bit ragged at first - would idle OK but had a high speed miss. I then ran about a half pint of Seafoam through the primary throttle of the Weber, shut it off and let it cook a little bit.

Then I installed a set of decent NGK plugs left over from my B and fired it up. After the smoke cleared it was idling smooth as silk at about 850 rpm and revs cleanly all the way up. It starts immediately upon twisting the key.

I have it up on jackstands and ran it up and down through the gears - seems to work just fine but 1st gear seems really noisy to me, at least as compared to my B. I know these are non-synchro but is this normal? I have not yet changed the trans fluid - just checked the level and it was down a bit. Do any of you recommend any additives for the trans or just 20W-50?

20W50.
The first gear is straight cut I believe. They howl. Luckily, you don't need first for very long.

First on the smooth boxes in any case are square cut, not very noisy though unless worn out.

In any case are only used to 5 MPH or so.

1st is whiney and noisy.....
no additives in ur tranny...it causes foaming
and other bad stuff..

I like to think of it as music; a song it sings as it is happy to be moving, under power.
Or is it a scream of agony because you're stuck in traffic?

Based on first impressions, it ain't the most musical sound I've ever heard /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/nonod.gif

it might sound musical the next time i hear it, but as i recall, it was quite loud on the highway at about 55-60 mpg. but that was long ago!

I just checked, first is used only to 10 to 12 MPH in any case.

no no no ... i meant 4th gear (and you knew that!)... i don't think i spent much of any time in 1st to begin with ... yeah 1st at 55-60? oh no! bad day!

Man, I can hear those teeth and other schrapnel even through the internet :-( That would be a bad day for sure!

If I could go 55-60 mph in first in MY bugeye, it would be a GREAT day, that would mean I could do 180-something in fourth, wouldn't it? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

Mike, I'd be happy to go 55-60 in fourth in my Bugeye... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
