It goes "tick tick tick tick tick..."

I snapped a speedo cable a while back, and replaced it before my vacation. Ever since I replaced the speedo cable I've noticed a tick coming from the firewall area in front of the passenger that is in sync with a "pulse" on the speedometer, and it varies with speed. I'm 90% certain that this tick is originating from the "Service Counter" on the firewall in the engine compartment.

Anyone know of a way to silence this thing? It's starting to annoy me.

When did they start using the counters and what do they look like?

I believe they were on the 1976 model year only.....a little yellow box attached to the firewall on the right hand side of the engine bay. The speedo cable went from transmission to this box the a smaller cable went from the counter to the speedo. Most were bypassed after the car went out of warrantee.

Just fixed my 76 speedo cable and did not bypass the box. I don't hear any ticks. Can you get the car on jack stands put it in first and run it to locate the noise?

I fix it by removing them & putting them on shelf - just change to regular speedo cable...but don't toss the 2 that are there now!

I have one of those on my 75 - so maybe it was 75 and 76 model years??

It's loud enough that I can hear distinctly that it is coming from the passenger side fire wall while driving the car. I'll see if fiddling around with it this weekend can subdue the noise. If that doesn't work, then I guess I'll go with Tony's solution and get one of those long cables.
