Issues passing SMOG testing

Well, FINALLY, my Midget 1500cc motor is ready to be picked up from the machine shop. It needed to be bored .020 and have the crank ground .010 on all journals.

As far as the bore, I was told (don't know how accurate this is... ) that I might still be able to use the 7.5:1 stock pistons and just go with oversized rings, but I've opted to go with new 9:1 flat top pistons.

I've had the cam reground for more performance. The reground cam specs are .280 lift, .423 intake lift, .421 exhaust lift, duration 280 degrees, intake timing 37 - 63 degrees, exhaust timing 73 - 27 degrees.

Problem is, I've also been told that the car may not pass smog if I go to the 9:1 pistons due to valve overlap.

I was hoping to lose the air pump and cat from the car and go with a monza header.

Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to give as much info as I could as I'm not that familiar with LBC engines (all my friends say I should put an chevy motor in the car... LOL).

Anyway, does anyone have any thoughts on troubles I may encounter with smog testing, or what further changes I may need to do to get it to pass?

As always, thanks for everyone's time!

If you tried to use stock diameter pistons with .020" overbore, the pistons would rattle around something awful & fail in a short time. Normal clearance would be to have the pistons about .002" to .003" smaller than the bores.

It's not the 9:1 pistons that will cause smog problems, but the higher overlap cam may cause some problems. I wouldn't throw away the air pump & cat just yet.
