Issue with Reverse

I am working on a friends car which is a Lotus kit car with a Midget engine and 5 speed transmission. Car shifts very tight in all gears but is hard to get into reverse. I have tried adjusting the Slave cylinder rod both directions with no improvement in Reverse. We think the transmission is a Datsun conversion. Does anyone have an idea what to check in the transmission to determine the shifting problem?

I feel like the first thing to check is whether the gear shift lever is binding anywhere or if the transmission is hard against the tunnel - IIRC it is a very tight fit

Good point. I was wondering if someone installed a race shift conversion. There is very little space between gears
