Issue with generator wiring. Please Help

So we hooked up the generator after polarizing it. Everything is working and its a brand new wire harness. When we start the car, the gauge goes directly to discharge. We reversed the wires and nothing registers on the gauge. Which way are the color code wires supposed to be connected? What else may be my issue?

Thanks

Sounds more like a control box problem, maybe. The heavier yellow wire should go from the 'D' terminal on the control box to the large terminal on the generator. The smaller yellow with green wire should go from the 'F' terminal on the control box to the smaller terminal on the generator.

Another possibility might be the ammeter connected backwards. What happens if you turn on the headlights with the engine stopped?

Normally, the cutout relay inside the control box will not connect the generator to the battery until the generator is producing close to 12v.

What does the red light do?

BTW, I'm in Torrance at the moment ...

OK. We"ll check all this thank you. The car is in Texas right now waiting to go to upholstery but we need to figure this out 1st.
Thanks
