Issue with Distributor

Ray,

I also have a Crane system, and carry a set of points, condenser, cap and rotor, but to help out the other guys.

So far John, your stated reason for carrying the ignition spares is correct. Hopefully for both of us, it continues.

I did have a failure of Crane's predecessor, whom Crane purchased, and was left by the side of the road not knowing what happened. Luckily the failure happened just down the road and a friend and I pushed the car back to my garage for diagnosis. The unit trigger had failed and I got my Crane by convincing them they had to stand by the original guaranty as they purchased both assets and obligations.

When looking for Crane, I noticed the units now has the "FAST" name and a product search, on the Crane web site, takes you to an unused URL. Could it be that our electronic setup has been purchased by another company?

Michael,

I can agree with everything you have said. The reason for carrying the spare points setup is because I had it and never changed it. Keep in mind that I made the decision to carry the spares after having a failure of the unit supplied by the company purchased by Crane and, after that experience, wanted something to get me going. Although I could install and set a points ignition in short order then, I have continued to carry the original points setup but never had a failure with the Crane replacement (under guaranty). My suggestion to GadWhite was made to provide him with a backup and presumed he would be more likely to have the extra components already available rather then another Pertronix.

I carry a spare distributor with points while I run a pertronix. I like points for a backup on the theory that if I fry my pertronix, I'd sure hate to fry a replacement from the same cause.

Gotcha Ray.

And whether one's backup is a points set or electronic module it pays to at least read the instructions and maybe even do a practice installation in the comfort of your home or shop. Those parts are small and easily dropped--I have had the screw that holds the plate suddenly pop out of its hole and fall down into the distributor body, and that was when I was working on a bench. Those washers that isolate the post sometimes seem like they are spring-loaded.
