Is your Bugeye an "innie" or an "outie"?

Is your Bugeye an "innie" or an "outie"?

Just wondering. I prefer mine as an outie.....not sure what is "correct", but it's just more aesthetically pleasing to me. I have seen Bugeyes (and early Midgets) at shows both ways, so I guess it's a personal preference thing.

So......what's yours?

Outie (but I thought that's the way they were SUPPOSED to be).

I think they are supposed to be outies too, but I've seen enough innies though to make me wonder if it's just a personal preference thing or if there's some underlying reason why someone installs the boot one way or the other.

Re: Is your Bugeye an "innie" or an "outie"?

Some early magazine articles show PBL-75 with an outie... However, page 11 in the original drivers handbook shows it as an innie. I think for every 1 early photo you can find with an outie, you can find at least 3 with an innie.

I say innie is the only way, and you guys with an outie make me nutz

If you want more "proof" , look at your own photos; as an outie you see two manufacturer's marks around the 9 o'clock position...why would those be intended to be seen? Answer; they wouldn't. Not to mention the boot fits the shifter better as an innie...

The innie defense rests (and enjoys a beer) :hammer:

No opinion - but, we got just a little bit 'O spare time on our hands don't we? :jester:

Re: Is your Bugeye an "innie" or an "outie"?

I've got reference materials so I figure I may as well use them... :yesnod:

Re: Is your Bugeye an "innie" or an "outie"?

I like how it fits the can as an innie, but prefer the overall look as an outie. BTW.......I have changed out that boot 2 or 3 times over the years and this latest one is the only one that has had those makers marks. It does lend some credence to the innie crowd, doesn't it?

Re: Is your Bugeye an "innie" or an "outie"?

Horler's book appears to show 'innie', with 'innie' defined as the lever coming out of a bit of a depression. And I think a running Sprite is very good for getting one out of a depression!

Re: Is your Bugeye an "innie" or an "outie"?

Mine is an "outie" ... works better with the five speed shifter.

Re: Is your Bugeye an "innie" or an "outie"?

Interesting question. I have mine installed as an "outie". After looking through a couple of books other than Horler's and a few dozen period magazine articles, it appears that the vast majority were installed as "innies".

Re: Is your Bugeye an "innie" or an "outie"?

The original workshop manual shows a line drawing of the interior, and it shows an innie. Makes some sense- the lever moves less lower down where the neck fits tight.

That being said, do what feels right. I had my rear bumpers on upside down for 20 years...

Re: Is your Bugeye an "innie" or an "outie"?

Yes, but both the Service Part Manuals and shop manuals (transmission section) show it as in "innie". Those would carry more weight from a "correctness" standpoint in my opinion.

Re: Is your Bugeye an "innie" or an "outie"?

My Service Parts List, Third Edition, dated June 1960 shows it as an "innie" on Plate FA illustration number 59.

Just changed mine from outie to innie.

Re: Is your Bugeye an "innie" or an "outie"?

It's good to know that officially they were outies. I also have a 5-speed and the boot moves around way too much when I shift it as an outie, so I will continue being an innie.

Re: Is your Bugeye an "innie" or an "outie"?

Had a bugeye with a worn transmission and in the "outie" position it would make the trans pop out of 3rd gear. Always been an "innie" since.

Kurt.

Hmmmm.....I can't find the "edit" button. I mis-typed this.....I meant to say: It's good to know that officially they were innies. **edit to say I can edit! Is there some sort of time limit on editing ones posts? All my other posts in this thread are missing the edit function, except for this one (which I just typed). Very odd.**

Yeah, I don't know the duration, but there seems to be a time limit on the edit button.

Re: Is your Bugeye an "innie" or an "outie"?

As for having an innie or outie, I used to have an innie in my '69. I ended up with a problem after installing the rivergate 5-speed, in that the innie would either pop the transmission out of 3rd or 4th gear (I forget which one)...or that the innie itself would pop out of it's opening letting in heat...and causing me to get dirty trying to push it all back in place...

The resolution for this issue was to replace it with one from an MGB.... which is like a 2-level outie tower....
