Is the breather in the rocker cover really necessary? I was looking at getting a fancy shiny one, and I see some don't have breathers. Its on a 1275 motor.
 
Have you a sidecover vent? Under the manifold, front tappet cover.
 
I have a shiny cover with no vent. I use a vented cap.
I do have a crankcase breather where the old mech fuel pump
was and a timing cover can as well.
They do like to blow out a bit so venting is important.
 
I only have a vent on the timing cover and the rocker cover currently
 
My bad, thinking of the 1800 vent. The timing cover one is equivalent on the 1275's. Between that one and Gundy's solutions I'd think you should be okay unless the rings are in poor shape.
 
Crazy, that company is about an hour from me, and I never knew they existed!

I note the chrome cap appears to vent via the tiny hole.
The plastic vented cap vents all around with mesh inside the cap. Maybe not as pretty but I'd suspect it would vent better.

I'm not sure about that. From what I remember, there is a disk with a hole in it on the plastic vented caps to keep the mesh in place. I suspect the hole in the plastic disk is equivalent to the hole in the vented metal cap.

I said "suspect" cause I don't know and Mimi is in the shop
for her makeover preventing me from looking at the cap.

I run the car pretty hard and oil does blow out of the thing.
More than out of the timing chain cover can or vented cap.
In fact the front can and rocker cover cap show almost no signs
of blow out. I have an "improved/modified rear seal deal" and
it still drips there after a run for a bit then stops after the car sits for a few minutes.
I suppose I should attach a catch can to the breather but
the blow out is so minor it hasn't been a problem.
It's on a to do list...way down there.
I'm not running a PCV.
 
I have the same valve cover on my 948 and have it vented. If you look at the carb side of the cover just in front of the cap there is a small round flat spot. I drilled out the flat spot and threaded it to fit a 90 degree chrome elbow available at any plumbing center and then ran a hose to my catch can. I also used a blanking plate on the mechanical fuel pump hole again with a 90 degree elbow soldered into the plate with another hose to my catch can.
